Resignation Advice
Resigning can sometimes be a pleasurable experience, finally leaving a job you have been unhappy in, but mostly it is a time when you are leaving colleagues and a company you have worked closely with.
Here are a few pointers to remember:
- Tell your immediate boss informally. Try and do this face to face, before handing in your formal letter
- Give reasons why you are leaving but do not express any anger and avoid any insults to either the company or work colleagues. Your resignation letter should not be a platform for you to air your grievances
- Be prepared to consider a counter offer from your present employer. If this does happen try and remember the reasons you wanted to leave in the first place and why the company has only now offered you a pay rise when you have threatened to leave
- Do as much as you can whilst working your notice period to facilitate a smooth handover of your duties
- Ask your Manager if he would be willing to provide you with a reference in the future
Always remember that the environmental industry is a close knit community and that people you were working with now could be work colleagues or future employers, so always try and remember to leave on good terms.
